Dark River
Director: Clio Barnard (“The Arbor,” “The Selfish Giant”)
Cast: Ruth Wilson, Mark Stanley, Sean Bean, Esme Creed-Miles, Aiden McCullough
Details: Premiering in Toronto the other month, the indie British thriller sees “Luther” alum Ruth Wilson returning to her home village on the Yorkshire Moors for the first time in 15 years, following her father’s death, to claim the tenancy to the family farm she believes is rightfully hers. Her brother (Mark Stanley), who stayed behind, initially welcomes her but resentment soon builds.

On top of that, she has to deal with the memories of her past, of her brutish father (Sean Bean) and where she sees her life heading. Wilson was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for her work, while the film itself won an honourable mention at the Toronto Film Festival mostly for its acting as opposed to its storyline.
