“Daredevil” S3 Inspired By ‘Born Again’ Story
The recently released “The Defenders” event series came to a close with a shot that teases what to expect from the in development third season of Marvel and Netflix’s “Daredevil”.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “THE DEFENDERS”
Now, speaking about that scene, actor Charlie Cox indicates to THR that the final shot of the series and its tribute to artwork in Frank Miller’s “Born Again” storyline is very deliberate and suggests the new season would adapt that most famous of Daredevil arcs:
“You can’t not. And if that’s the case, then the implications of that would be very exciting to me. That would be great. Having said that, I know we don’t tend to follow any story blueprints too closely, because if you do, then you become a foregone conclusion.
There may be elements from Born Again, but I’m sure there will be elements that are unfamiliar and surprising and different in order for the show to be compelling to fans who know the comics very well. If we start making Born Again page-for-page, then the people who have read it and loved it — the hardcore fans — they won’t have too much drama.”
The comics story deals with Daredevil’s secret identity being sold to her drug dealer, with the information making its way to Wilson ‘Kingpin’ Fisk who does everything to effectively destroy Matt’s life – freezing his accounts, foreclosing his home, getting him disbarred, etc. Matt is driven to paranoia and insanity until he’s saved by Sister Maggie, who turns out to be his mother Maggie.
One notable change will undoubtedly be Karen Page who is a heroin-addicted porn actress in the comic arc, and is anything but in the show so far. Another is Ben Urich who is a key character in the comics, but is gone from the TV series.
Another change will be crossovers with “The Defenders” co-showrunner Marco Ramirez telling Collider that in the wake of the event series, crossovers between the shows are more likely.
“The Defenders” is now streaming on Netflix while “Daredevil” season 3 is expected to go into production before year’s end ahead of a late 2018 airing.

"Born Again" is a 1986 comic book story arc that appeared in the Marvel Comics series Daredevil. Written by Frank Miller, and drawn by David Mazzucchelli, the storyline first appeared in Daredevil #227–231. It was later reprinted in graphic novel format along with a follow-up story arc from Daredevil #232–233, which resolves some loose ends from the original story arc. Because of this, this follow-up story arc has become generally considered part of "Born Again".
The story details Daredevil's descent into insanity and destitution at the hands of the Kingpin, as well as his subsequent struggle to build a new life for himself.

Bullseye To Be “Daredevil” S3 Villain?
A new report has revealed new details about the casting of Wilson Bethel (“Hart of Dixie”) in a critical role in the third season of “Marvel’s Daredevil” at Netflix.
That Hashtag Show says Bethel’s, who up until this point has been listed as a character named Steve and is an FBI agent is, in fact, going to play the mercenary marksman and assassin Bullseye.
The site speculates this will be an adaptation of the character from writer Jason Aaron’s run on Punisher MAX, which changed Bulleye’s real name to Sheldon Pendergrass.
It’s thought the “Born Again” story arc from the comics, in which Kingpin learns Matt Murdock’s secret identity and systematically dismantles his life, will be the basis of the new season.
Erik Oleson takes over as showrunner with the new episodes expected out at year’s end. A release date will likely be announced with the release of “Luke Cage” S2 on June 22nd.

Netflix Cancels Marvel’s “Daredevil” Series
The Netflix and Disney library of content divorce has dropped any sense of being amicable as Netflix has officially cancelled “Daredevil,” the first of its Marvel shows to premiere on the platform, after three seasons.
This marks the third Marvel drama to be cancelled at Netflix in recent weeks, following “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage” which were both axed after their second seasons. “Daredevil,” led by Charlie Cox, recently launched its third season to much acclaim. Netflix said in a statement:
“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
Now, only “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher” remain. Both shows have new seasons, a third and a second respectively, on the way and currently in production and/or post-production. Both of those are expected to air early next year (and it’s a good bet both won’t be renewed).

Marvel Responds To “Daredevil” Axing
Following yesterday’s sudden cancellation of “Daredevil” after three seasons by Netflix, Marvel Entertainment has responded to the axing of its flagship character.
The Charlie Cox-led series had a bit of resurgence with critics in its third season after stumbling a bit in its second, but in the wake of “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage” getting the chop, along with the launch of the Disney+ streaming service next year, the inevitable end of the Disney and Netflix’s partnership has now become akin to an acrimonious divorce with the pair trying to cut out all the parts of their lives they shared with each other.
So the writing was on the wall for “Daredevil” and the other two remaining shows “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher”. Both those shows have new seasons on the way early next year and it’s widely expected that both will announce news of their cancellation shortly after those seasons go to air. The Disney-owned company says in a statement:
“Marvel is extremely grateful to the huge audience that loved Marvel’s ‘Daredevil.’ From the moment of young Matt’s first act of heroism to the birth of Page, Murdock, & Nelson, it has been an unbelievable journey. We are incredibly proud of the amazing showrunners and writers starting with Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie and Erik Oleson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio and our casts who brought our characters to life with such excellence, and every one of the fantastic crews in NYC. We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”
In addition, co-executive producer Sam Ernst posted on Twitter today: “Man, so weird to be in the Daredevil writers room today, getting the news that we’re cancelled. On the walls were an entire season 4 laid out – and it was so f——g cool. So many moments we wanted the fans to see… Sigh, this business.”
Many questions have arisen regarding what will happen here, and it’s not as simple as the shows simply starting up again at Disney+ when it launches. As Netflix has previously made quite clear, the existing seasons of the shows will remain on its service for “years to come”.
However, Disney and Marvel own the IP and “Daredevil” remains one of the most valuable properties on the slate. Rebooting the property with a new cast and story for the service would be a fairly simple matter. Reassembling the same cast and continuing those storylines? That seems far more unlikely.
Veteran TV writer Alan Sepinwall says: “The execs have already said they don’t want these shows on the Disney service. And even if they did, the nature of the contracts would make it virtually impossible. They’re done. And if they did, they’d be starting over from scratch creatively, like Sony ditching the Andrew Garfield movies for Tom Holland as Spider-Man.”
In any case, Marvel Studios is developing a slate of limited series focused on members of the “Avengers” and those are taking priority first. One of those got its title confirmed today – “Vision and the Scarlet Witch”.

“Daredevil” Writer: “It Was Too Big To Fail”
The decision last week by Netflix to cancel “Marvel’s Daredevil” surprised many of those actually involved in the show – not just the stars or writers, but even Marvel executives themselves.
Speaking with Gizmodo, series writer Tamara Becher-Wilkinson says: “If I was a betting woman, you know, my guess is that it’s the end of the Marvel universe on Netflix.” Becher-Wilkinson was working on the fourth season of the series with the storyline drafted and pitched to Netflix.
The writers were waiting for the seemingly inevitable news that they would get renewed, even with the recent cancellations of “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist,” but it didn’t happen and the axing was a shock. Becher-Wilkinson, who was in the middle of creating a writing schedule for season four, says:
“[Showrunner Erik Oleson] got a call asking him to go down to see the Marvel executives, and I jokingly went ‘Ooooooooh,’ like a third grader does when someone gets called to a principal’s office. Then, he waited for everybody to gather back in the writers’ room and he said, ‘Netflix has decided not to move forward with season four.’ And that’s all I remember, you know. I kind of missed the details because I was, like, so surprised.”
Becher-Wilkinson adds she wasn’t surprised when “Iron Fist,” which she also worked on, got cancelled but said she was floored when “Daredevil” followed suit because of both the great critical and fan reception and its spot as a legacy series:
“The reviews were so overwhelmingly positive that I thought there was no way they would cancel it. I don’t know how well it does on Netflix or anything like that…[but] it was surprising to me they would cancel something that was so well received. I thought it was too big to fail.”
Netflix hasn’t given an official reason why it’s cancelled its three Marvel-Disney shows but with Disney’s streaming service Disney+ launching next year, it is being seen as the obvious reason. Disney owns the rights to the characters and so could reboot the shows on the service, but continuations of any of the Marvel-Netflix collaborations is looking more and more unlikely.

Charlie Cox Talks “Daredevil” Cancellation
The sudden axing of “Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix the other week still has people reeling, but those involved in the project have remained pretty quiet about it bar the writers and producers who’ve discussed their surprise.
Now the show’s main star Charlie Cox has finally stepped forward and offered his take on its abrupt. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly he said:
“A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did. The truth is, I felt like we had a lot of stories to tell, and although I understand [the cancellation], I’m very saddened by that. It’s just how business works. But also, these characters mean a lot to people. It’s weird to think there’s a chance I won’t be playing Matt Murdock ever again. That’s a bizarre feeling because that character has been such a huge part of my life for the last four and a half years.”
Writers had already begun laying the groundwork for the next season which Cox was keen to be involved in but sadly it won’t happen and he can’t offer any details. He would be open to returning to the character, saying: “Oh my God, yeah. I don’t know how this would happen, but maybe one day we could pick up the baton and do it again.”

Even so, it was still a bit of a shock considering the series was easily the best performer numbers wise and was riding a wave of good reviews for its third season.
Since its axing, there’s been a bunch of debate as to whether it was Marvel or Netflix that pulled the plug and as different bits of information come forth, the situation doesn’t get that much clearer. Today Amy Rutberg, who plays Foggy Nelson’s love interest Marci in the series, spoke with Inverse and says the decision to end the show was entirely a Netflix one:
“My contacts at Marvel were very surprised. Any of the rumors that it was a Marvel decision are wrong, I think it was purely a Netflix decision. That comes from personal conversations with people high up at Marvel. They were surprised. We had heard rumors we would start production [on the fourth season] as early as February 2019. It’s a little unusual to be that far ahead in the planning and cancel the show, which makes me think Netflix was laboring over whether or not to cancel it. My guess was it was not an easy decision.”
According to the actress everyone assumed there were going to be a total of five seasons and confirmed that all actors involved in the series signed exclusive deals with Netflix for the show and would not be able to immediately begin work on a new “Daredevil” series if Disney/Marvel wanted to do it:
“There is this very real contract with Netflix. I had heard 18 months, maybe it’s 2 years. I suppose it’s possible that Marvel could buy them out, but I have not heard so much as a whisper.”
There has been speculation that Disney and Marvel were behind the cancellations so as to try and get all the Marvel characters back with them and perhaps on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service or on Hulu. In any case Marvel TV, which produces the shows as opposed to Marvel Studios who are producing the upcoming “Avengers” spin-off shows for Disney+, definitely seems to have been caught off guard.
