The first trailer has arrived for Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” film, which opens early next year.

“Black Panther” follows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who, after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King.

The film’s director Coogler and Joe Robert Cole co-wrote the screenplay and the movie opens February next year.

Coogler, Feige Explain “Black Panther” Trailer

coogler-feige-explain-black-panther-trailer-696x464.jpg

In the wake of the “Black Panther” teaser trailer release on Friday, EW has posted up a feature piece breaking down a bunch of new information about the film including comments from Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler.

First up, the Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) interrogation scene at the start takes place in a safehouse in Korea with T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and his security chief Okoye (Danai Gurira) watching. The car flip at the end is also set in Korea.

Wakanda has great resources of vibranium, a unique metal with almost mystical, technological powers which has allowed Wakanda to develop advanced technologies. The ship that we see flying is the ‘Royal Talon Fighter’, the Black Panther’s personal shuttle both flying over the capital city and away from the ‘Warrior Falls’ – the place where kings are coronated.

In that coronation flashback there’s Forest Whitaker’s character Zuri, a shaman and trusted adviser of the king whom Coogler dubs a mentor character with major ties back to T’Challa’s father. Others in the scene include the leaders of the tribes of Wakanda who do not always unite.

There’s also kids participating in a ritual which deals with a creation from a plant. Feige says: “People who read the comics would be familiar with the Heart-Shaped Herb and the ceremonies that surround that. That’s partially spiritual. We certainly don’t call it magic, but there’s Vibranium that has been interwoven within that soil and that land for thousands of years, so there are other things going on with it.”

So what is the Heart-Shaped Herb? Coogler says: “It’s how Black Panther achieves his powers. He can fight hand-to-hand with Cap, who’s a super soldier, so he has super strength and heightened instincts that give him his enhanced abilities. The Heart-Shaped Herb is what Black Panthers over the generations would consume, once they earn the title, which gives them their physical edge.”

Michael B. Jordan is Erik Killmonger, a Wakandan exile who is the one in the horned mask trying to break Klaue free. Coogler doesn’t want to reveal too much about Killmonger’s background. Klaue, who lost an arm in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” won’t get a sonic emitter, but rather a piece of advanced Wakandan mining equipment which becomes an arm-cannon.

Letitia Wright’s Princess Shuri character is said to be only a fighter but a brilliant scientist, on par with Iron Man’s Tony Stark. She has spent her life researching and experimenting with Vibranium, the twin blasters she dons in one shot are just one of her many devices.

Isaach De Bankole’s emerald suit and lip plated character is described as the elder of one of the largest tribes in Wakanda. The trailer shot of a man in native outfit yelling is M’Baku (Winston Duke), the ruthless ruler of the Jabari mountain tribe who is also known as Man-Ape in the comics. Another shot confirms Killmonger and M’Baku have a fight at Warrior Falls.

The shot of Black Panther, sans helmet, approaching a crowd is set outside one of Wakanda’s Vibranium mines. The scenes on a landing pad towards the end of the trailer, in which Killmonger faces down an entire squad of Dora Milaje who themselves find other tribes are no longer loyal to their king.

Additionally, Boseman has confirmed on Twitter that he’s begun work on the currently in production “Avengers: Infinity War”. “Black Panther” opens early next year.

I will go to see this if they team him up with the Pink Panther.

Just as long as Steve Martin or Roberto Benigni is not involved, that is.
Need to use the same technique they used to resurrect Peter Cushing for Rogue One and have Peter Sellers reprise his role.

“Black Panther” Trailer Scores 89M Views

black-panther-trailer-scores-89m-views-696x464.jpg

The teaser trailer for Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” film was a smash hit with a report today indicating it generated 89 million views in the first 24 hours of its debut.

The spot debuted Friday during the first quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals on ABC before being released on various social media platforms. The figure includes the 19 million views from those watching the NBA Finals.

That surpasses the views for teasers for “Captain America: Civil War” (61 million), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (55 million) and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (52 million).

However it is behind Marvel & Disney’s top launch, the “Thor: Ragnarok” teaser (136 million), and the biggest overall trailer launch to date which was the “IT” teaser (197 million).

Black Panther
Director: Ryan Coogler (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”)
Cast: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira
Details: Marvel finally varies up its formula a bit, probably the most since “Guardians of the Galaxy,” with this take on the African-American comic book hero who was previously introduced in “Captain America: Civil War”. In the film T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. He must also defend his kingdom against the alliance of an exiled rival (Michael B. Jordan) and a black market arms dealer (Andy Serkis).

While even the great Taika Waititi was slightly hampered by Marvel’s uniform approach to filmmaking with “Thor: Ragnarok,” hopes are high that “Creed” filmmaker Ryan Coogler can break out a bit more with the lesser known but more interesting hero. This offers something never really seen on film – a big budget sci-fi film with an almost entirely non-white cast of superb actors played out against an Africa rendered as a futuristic utopia. The trailers offer so much promise that this could easily stand out as one of their best ‘first’ films in a standalone franchise.

Just saw the film last night.

I would say that Marvel have now got the crafting of these things down to a fine art. They really know what they are doing.

Poor D.C. are still struggling to walk, the odd bright spot, such as Wonder Woman, excepted.

Great review, as always, Dave. :emoji_alien:

“Panther” Director On Lack Of Infinity Stone

panther-director-on-lack-of-infinity-stone-696x464.jpg

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” is the first in many things, but in one way it’s the last – the last MCU film to come out before “Avengers: Infinity War” launches and kicks off a two-film saga which serves as a conclusion of sorts to ten years of Marvel films and at least five years of direct teasing since the first “The Avengers” in 2012.

That film centers around Thanos and his quest for the six Infinity Stones, five of which have been featured in earlier films (“Avengers,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Doctor Strange” respectively).

When the sixth did not appear or get a mention in “Thor: Ragnarok,” it was assumed “Black Panther” would incorporate that element into its storyline. It doesn’t, the movie serving as essentially a standalone film aside from callbacks to events in “Captain America: Civil War”.

Speaking with IGN, Coogler was asked if there were ever any plans to include the final Infinity Stone in his movie. He says:

“I love the Infinity Stones as much as any comic book fan, it’s just Wakanda already has its thing, which is Vibranium. For us, that was special enough, so to throw in something, like another special thing, didn’t feel right. It felt like we should stick with our one MacGuffin for the country and explore that, let that be the important thing because, frankly we didn’t need to have another piece like that. The studio was never really interested in putting a stone in there, either.”

Before the film was screened, theories ran rampant that the missing ‘Soul Stone’ was hidden in Wakanda or tied into it somehow, which would explain why the ‘Infinity War’ trailer showcases a huge alien army descending upon the country. Now though, it seems as if the stone will be revealed in ‘Infinity War’ when that film hits in a little under three months.

Back to “Black Panther” and it is going from strength to strength. Its opening day haul has come in at $75.8 million domestically with the movie now on its way towards a $200 million four-day holiday weekend haul. Along with the strong critical reviews, the film has also received an A+ CinemaScore from audiences – only the second MCU film to do so since “The Avengers”.

“Black Panther” Final Opening At $242M

black-panther-final-opening-at-242m-696x464.jpg

The final numbers for the holiday box-office are in and Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” yet again exceeded estimates and finished with $40.2 million for the day – the largest Monday box-office haul for a movie of all time.

‘Panther’ beat out the first Monday after the opening of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to take that crown, pushing its four-day domestic total to $241.96 million. That gives it the second-biggest four-day total ever behind only ‘Force Awakens’ and just ahead of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”.

A further $15.2 million was earned on Monday in overseas markets bringing its international total to $184.6 million. The film isn’t proving as much a sensation internationally as it is in the U.S., but it is easily beating expectations for an American film with a nearly all-black cast.

Its worldwide total now stands at $426.6 million after less than a week of release and the film still has yet to open in Russia, Japan and China. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger took to Twitter this morning to congratulate those involved saying:

“The world has embraced Black Panther, which has obliterated expectations, broken records & shattered myths. Powerful storytelling that touches hearts, bridges cultures, opens minds. Grateful to @Marvelstudios, #RyanCoogler & the cast and crew. #BlackPanther #WakandaForever”

Well I just got back from seeing this and I have to say it's another success for Marvel. Totally enthralling, beautiful world, well developed multi-dimensional villain. My only criticism would be
the killing of Klau. Given Marvel's issue with well developed villains and almost none recurring, I thought it was a waste to kill him. He had the potential to be an ongoing villain throughout the MCU. Probably not a big boss villain, but a recurring second tier villain. The performance by Andy Serkis was delightfully over the top and I would have loved to see more of him.

“Panther” Tops “Tomb Raider” At Box-Office

Disney and Marvel’s “Black Panther” won a fifth consecutive weekend at the box-office with $27 million, the first time any film has held the top spot for five weeks in a row since “Avatar”.

The film beat out the “Tomb Raider” reboot which finished its debut run in second with $23.5 million. The action-adventure score a B grade from moviegoers in CinemaScore polls, and overseas it pulled in $84.5 million with almost half that from China.

Defying expectations, the faith-based drama “I Can Only Imagine” came in third with a strong $17.1 million with plans to expand its run next weekend. “A Wrinkle in Time” slipped to fourth in its second weekend with $16.6 million – down by half.

Fifth was the gay teen comedy-drama “Love, Simon” which nabbed $11.5 million along with very strong critics reviews and a rare A+ CinemaScore with audiences. Finally the thriller “7 Days in Entebbe” came in 13th with $1.6 million.

The 19th annual Golden Trailer Awards were held late this week with Disney and Marvel’s “Black Panther” coming out on top with both the top prize and four trophies overall.

Surprisingly it wasn’t the original teaser from last year with the ‘Run the Jewels’ track, but rather the latter one released in January and using ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ as the main backing track.

Both Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and HBO’s “Westworld” also scored three awards each. Seventeen of the one-hundred and eight awards announced were handed out at a ceremony held at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
