Sharks Get A Sequel With “48 Meters Down”
The year’s most successful independent film at the domestic box-office, the Mandy Moore and Claire Holt-led shark thriller “47 Meters Down,” is getting a sequel.
Johannes Roberts is returning to write and direct “48 Meters Down” for The Fyzz Facility which will shift the deadly underwater action from Mexico to Brazil. Ernest Riera is also returning as co-writer.
The story this time will follow a group of girls looking for adventure in the coastal metropolis of Recife. They hear about some hidden underwater ruins only to find that the turquoise waves of their secret Atlantis aren’t completely uninhabited.
Budgeted at just $5.5 million, “47 Meters Down” was famously slated to be dumped direct to VOD, but then got picked up by Entertainment Studios and repackaged. With the help of some astute marketing, the film ended up grossing $44 million domestically with a further $9 million overseas.
