George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman are reportedly in early negotiations to play the two leading roles in “1917,” the new WW1 drama that marks the first directorial effort of Sam Mendes since his two James Bond films “Skyfall” in 2012 and “Spectre” in 2015.

MacKay is best known for smaller UK films like “How I Live Now,” “Marrowbone” and U.S. indie “Captain Fantastic,” while Chapman came to notice as the child king Tommen Baratheon in HBO’s “Game of Thrones”.

The pair will play two young soldiers who have to trek across dangerous terrain. Mendes wrote the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns and produces with Pippa Harris. Amblin Partners is behind the feature which begins shooting in April for a late 2019 release via Universal Pictures.

Sam Mendes’ first directorial effort since the Bond double efforts of “Skyfall” and “Spectre,” this WWI drama is setup at Spielberg’s Amblin Partners and is aiming for an awards season release. Plot specifics are under wraps though, beyond Mendes himself writing the script – the first time he’s done one. Cast includes familiar fresh British faces like George MacKay (“Marrowbone”) and Dean-Charles Chapman (“Game of Thrones”).

Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Colin Firth and Mark Strong are all set to join “Skyfall” and “Road to Perdition” filmmaker Sam Mendes’ new World War I-themed film “1917” at Neal Street Productions, DreamWorks Pictures and Universal Pictures.

George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman lead the film playing young British soldiers on a single day at the height of World War I. Andrew Scott, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Jamie Parker, Nabhaan Rizwan and Claire Duburcq have also joined the cast.

Mendes will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Mendes, Pippa Harris, Jayne-Ann Tenggren and Callum McDougall will produce. Filming begins on location in England and Scotland next week ahead of a release this Christmas.

Sam Mendes’ “1917” Will Be One Single Shot

So far not much is known about filmmaker Sam Mendes’ WW1 film “1917” beyond the casting and its basic premise of following two young British soldiers on the front line.

On the surface it sounds formulaic, another film about the war and the people who fought in it. However a new report at Indiewire indicates it plans to try something quite different from a technical perspective.

The site says Universal confirmed during its CinemaCon presentation that Mendes is attempting to film it to look like it has been shot in a single unbroken take (ala “Birdman,” “Victoria”). It gets more interesting when you realise the film is being done by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins. Deakins previously worked with Mendes on the most exquisite looking Bond film to date – “Skyfall”.

No real further details about the project were announced, but the studio says the film will be an “immersive” experience. George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch lead the cast of the project which has just begun production and could be out before year’s end.
