Sam Mendes’ “1917” Will Be One Single Shot
So far not much is known about filmmaker Sam Mendes’ WW1 film “1917” beyond the casting and its basic premise of following two young British soldiers on the front line.
On the surface it sounds formulaic, another film about the war and the people who fought in it. However a new report at
Indiewire indicates it plans to try something quite different from a technical perspective.
The site says Universal confirmed during its CinemaCon presentation that Mendes is attempting to film it to look like it has been shot in a single unbroken take (ala “Birdman,” “Victoria”). It gets more interesting when you realise the film is being done by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins. Deakins previously worked with Mendes on the most exquisite looking Bond film to date – “Skyfall”.
No real further details about the project were announced, but the studio says the film will be an “immersive” experience. George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch lead the cast of the project which has just begun production and could be out before year’s end.
