Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

OK - The Silmarilion: I fell asleep at a very early stage of that, on Brighton beach on a very hot day... given that Brighton beach is made entirely of chunky pebbles this was not my best idea ever, and probably unfairly biased my opinion of the book. Must try again, I suppose. Beren and Luthien...

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Shh! Peter Jackson might suddenly remember to give him a film of his own - I love the guy's work to bits, but that might be a bit of a dreg, even for me...

    Fun Our Even Earlier Posts!

@Gooey Hi - Loved your post - I genuinely didn't understand a word of it (and I like a challenge) - thus it must be when former IMDb posters are read by former lurkers? ...and yet here is where we meet. And possibly bewilder each other a bit. Add with any luck meet again elsewhere on some...

Review The Last Action Hero (1993)

I first saw it on TV so never knew it was a box office flop - it's great! Was Arnie doing comedy too outrageous for his action-thriller fan base? It was way after a similar basic plot joke in Purple Rose of Cairo, so maybe if the Conan - Terminator avids thought Arnie was channelling Woody Allen...

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Sorry everyone else for seeming to go so far off topic just lately - although in my/our defence, there's something very Hobbity about a digression on the subject of large breakfasts that we really were actually on-topic all along (might be one for the Mods to arbitrate though) This thread, plus...

    Review Joker (2019)

It's clearly time for bed - I just misread the thread title as the best Joke of all time and was prepared to suggest it has to be the one about Superman and Wonderwoman...the one that Gregory's sister warns him not to tell his date in "Gregory's Girl". Took me ages to find someone who actually...

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Here you are, just after I've attempted to start a conversation with you, wherever they turn up - please let me know if anything tips you off - I might have misfired with the new party trick. Well done your friend!! Hope you take that road trip soon.

Review The Lord of the Rings (1978)

It was my introduction to Middle Earth an I do still wish the second half had been made... anyone who could possibly have a problem with John Hurt playing Aragorn needs a good taste test. OK the pictures were bit better in the BBC radio version, but that took a whole year of weekly listening.

    Review Cinema-Going

@duzit Good evening - or whenever you come across this. Thank you for the comments on Emerald City. I've just watched the first episode and was pondering my next move, and your verdict of "lame" makes sense so far. I chanced on it with no advance hype, and might still stray to episode 2 tomorrow...

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

As if I would? Respect for the hearty foodstuff indeed - I ate it up like a good'un - but the confusing terminology threw me in the first place, then the fact of it being breakfast time and lastly the Very Big Hot Yellow Thing in the sky was indicating perhaps a cereal and fruit combo, or at...

    Review M*A*S*H (1972)

Hi Anouk, I hope you get to see the series some day - the first series has a tone a bit closer to the book then develops more of its own style - so at least I'm sure you'll enjoy that one. But it's brilliantly cast and I prefer it to the film version in lots of ways.

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Ah now my nanna came round to watch (the old) Poldark, loved the wrestling on Saturdays, taught me to knit, failed to teach me to crochet and never made biscuits at all. Now I have been fed "biscuits" in Arizona (they were scones); they were covered in "gravy" (it was white sauce with sausage...

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Have I accidentally bamboozled you my friend? Sorry! I mean Sir Terry Pratchett (the "P" is silent as it is in the name of the Ptraci, heroine of his Pyramids. If it's his elves you are after - you need specifically to read Lords and Ladies, but if you want to know just how much he loves...

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Knocks Narnia into a cocked hat! I'd never read a word of Tolkein (except our Middle English set texts) till I saw the Bakshi cartoon - the friend I went with were horrified and bought me the giant paperback-of-the-film for Christmas. Still got it - ragged, dogged and spine cracked to pieces...

Review The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Honestly, I thought it was a bit of a hatchett-job till I saw the extended version - then I realised that he knew exactly what he was doing all along. Bliss!
