Review That Poignant Film Which Touched Your Heart?

Hi Bux, Thanks for suggestions to expand the repertoire - when I lived in Birmingham, there were a couple of cinemas which specialised in showing arrivals from Bollywood, etc, and having a Punjabi flatmate helped there; but now it's not so much a case of overlooking Asian cinema more generally...

    Review Famous Artists!

OK (just nipped away to check some vital background facts) . Acclaimed, clearly, because it features twice in the Whoverse (still not too sure I like that abbreviation, but it'll do). City of Death (Tom Baker's Doctor in 1979) and Sarah Jane's Revenge of the Mona Lisa in 2009. Oh, the actual...

    Review Famous Artists!

Nuts, Doc - I saw the title question and came straight here pumped to say, surely no argument - Hoskins never put a foot wrong in his career, but this was an absolute gem: Now I have to retreat, regroup and think about Renaissance art a bit more....

    Poll A colleague's birthday dinner.

Oh, sweetie... I am so going to have to live this down a bit at a time... You have never tried, e.g. coming between me and too much red wine too late on a work night, for starters. I could be quite unkind, in order to do something ill-advised and totally unsafe! BUt keep spreading those rumours...

Fun The Last Movie That You Watched?

YES - and that's why I'm such a huge fan of TV's Horrible Histories - the one rule they had was however funny and however horrible, it had to be true. The fun thing about Braveheart though, was the charming group of intoxicated Scotsmen I met at the bus stop afterwards. They - I think 4 of them...

Fun The Last Movie That You Watched?

Kids today - do you think they'll remember popcorn? I could be in a cinema for eight hours again and still not want popcorn in any shape, size or form. Tee hee! Oh yes, while I'm feeling grumpy - three hours of bloody Braveheart, which came as a surprise - I hadn't realised the director was...

    Review Jessica Lange

She is an absolute joy to watch in Julie Taymor's version of Shakespeare's Titus, too.

    Review Miranda (1948)

Big thank you to the Doc for adding this one - it's one of several very British comedies of its generation that I was brought up watching on TV with my mum (suspect on Saturdays when dad was at Elland Road). There's Genevieve, and Whisky Galore and Geordie as well, and I think I'd put Margaret...

    Review The Little Mermaid (2018)

This one has potential (nearly said could have legs - so glad I stopped myself in time). Could it be that mermaids are about to replace zombies as our next-favourite not completely human entities? And does anyone else remember Miranda, a very sweet and silly comedy about a mermaid that Glynis...

No room for pizza, thanks, Doc - just filled up on beef stew. :emoji_smiling_imp:

Fun The Last Movie That You Watched?

:emoji_champagne_glass: Fantastic! I know it won't last so I'd quickly like to thank The Seeker, Tolstoy, Antony Hopkins and the ice-cream lady who kept us fully fuelled with choc-ices that memorable day. (Anyone else remember when they came wrapped in silver paper that really put your teeth on...

    Review Casablanca (1942)

Flaws in production values? Surely not flawed casting? I'd love to hear more And why have we got 2 Casablanca threads? Solidarity is called for here!

    Poll A colleague's birthday dinner.

Of course not! It was a kind thought, so how could that possibly be wrong? Not sure where in the world you are or what's usual - I imagine that if a work colleague of mine had a birthday meal like that everyone invited would probably have a whip-round and buy a joint prezzie, sign a communal...

    Review The Dam Busters (1955)

Peter Jackson would make me feel better about anything...but some things are so much of their time. I also heard it was Stephen Fry on script duty, maybe he's thought better of it or just got too busy. How could you possibly improve this film? Secretly we all know the important bits of WWII...

    Review Goldeneye (1995)

Last Bond film I actually enjoy - last but one I ever saw... Dame Judi, Smantha Bond, Sean Bean, Robbie Coltrane, Minnie Driver and Alan Cumming all make for a terrific supporting ensemble cast, but really, for me Bond in very small quantities is about 60s and 70s nostaligia viewing, so I really...

Fun The Last Movie That You Watched?

When I was a tiddler of a schoolgirl the BBC did a mind-blowing and seemingly endless adaptation of War and Peace - much collective drooling over Antony Hopkins... and terrible withdrawal symptoms when it finished. So when best friend and I discovered that a local flea-pit was devoting an entire...

Fun Post your own version of AFI's 50 screen legends

You're welcome! I think since Britain got over the whole Empire thing and former colonies asserted their independence and joined into the Commonwealth, The Bahamas very much belong to the Bahamans (or is it Bahamians?) Trust me, I'd love to be able to afford the sort of holiday where I got to go...

Fun Your Top 5 TV Shows of All Time!

My mum had a tendency in her later years to really enjoy classic comedies, time and again: Last of the Summer Wine, Only Fools and Horses Allo, Allo Vicar of Dibley but she was also very understanding of my frequent need to top up Buffy and Angel levels.
