Jason Reitman to Direct Secret ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie

Sony Pictures is getting the wheels in motion for the next installment in the “Ghostbusters” franchise, and it knows who it’s going to call to direct: Jason Reitman.

Sources tell Variety that Reitman, whose father, Ivan, directed the first two “Ghostbusters” movies, will direct the latest pic in the famous franchise.

Reitman has also co-written a screenplay with Gil Kenan and plans to shoot the film this summer, with Sony planning to release the latest sequel in summer 2020. Insiders say this film will be a continuation of the 1984 sequel and will not be connected to the 2016 film. Sources couldn’t say if that means that the original cast members will be back, as exact story details are still being kept under wraps.

Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Pictures is producing and insiders close to Ivan say he believes this film is a passing of the torch.

Sony and Jason Reitman already had a strong relationship after the studio came on to produce his latest film “The Front Runner.” Even though the 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot disappointed critically and commercially, the franchise is still a huge priority for the studio. While getting another film off the ground has always been discussed, bringing Reitman on has been covertly handled over the past couple of months, with the studio using a fake title to keep the news under wraps until plans were ready to be unveiled.

The film also marks Reitman’s first major tentpole, as he’s mostly focused on mid-budget movies like “Up in the Air” and his Golden Globe-nominated “Tully,” which also bowed last year.

He is repped by WME.

Jason Reitman To Direct “Ghostbusters 3”

Jason Reitman, whose father Ivan directed the first two original “Ghostbusters” films, will reportedly direct the next installment in the franchise at Sony Pictures.

Variety helped break the news, saying Reitman has co-written a screenplay with Gil Kenan and plans to shoot the film this summer ahead of a Summer 2020 release. It also indicates the film will be a continuation of the 1984 sequel and will not be connected to the 2016 reboot.

EW had even more including quotes from Jason Reitman who says: “I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

It’s not clear at present if or how many of the original cast members will be back as further story details are under wraps. Reitman says there’s a: “lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet” and so further details will be dolled out over coming months.

Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Pictures will produce with Ivan reportedly seeing this as a passing of the torch. This would also be the younger Reitman’s first major tentpole film. Sony is also developing an animated “Ghostbusters” film, but that will come out after this with a different team involved in creating it.

Just one day after its announcement, and still months away from filming, the first teaser trailer for the new “Ghostbusters” film has been released by Sony Pictures.

Oscar nominee Jason Reitman, son of the original film’s director Ivan Reitman, will be directing and co-writing the film which is a direct continuation of the two movies from the 1980s and not a sequel in any way to the 2016 reboot,

Sony Pictures will release the film in the summer of 2020 and are aiming to begin production this Summer. An animated “Ghostbusters” movie also remains in development.

I never saw the Ghostbusters sequels but I hear they weren’t that good.
Considering the phenomenon that the original film was, the sequel was always going to struggle...

However, I really enjoyed it and I thought it was quite good.

If they're getting the survivors from the first two films back together, I might actually go out of my way to watch this one.

As long as it doesn’t have the piss poor plot of the reboot, it will be watchable. That was a shame, as the actresses that made up the team had good chemistry.

Jones Not Happy With “Ghostbusters 3”

Last week came the surprise announcement that a new “Ghostbusters” was on the way, one that Jason Reitman would direct and would serve as a direct sequel to the original two films – in the process ignoring the Paul Feig-directed 2016 reboot.

That announcement has already caused a lot of conversation online – some very happy, some very upset, many indifferent. The latter doesn’t describe comedian Leslie Jones, who played Patty Tolan in the 2016 film, and she has made her unhappiness with the decision known.

Responding to a fan asking Jason Reitman on Twitter whether he’d bring back the 2016 characters, Jones tweeted the same tweet three times:

“So insulting. Like f–k us. We didn’t count. It’s like something Trump would do. (Trump voice): ‘Gonna redo ghostbusteeeeers, better with men, will be huge. Those women ain’t ghostbusteeeeers’. Ugh, so annoying. Such a dick move. And I don’t give f–k I’m saying something.”

Reitman previously said when the new film was announced: “I have so much respect for what Paul [Feig] created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film.”

The new film is rumored to feature a female lead and a cast of young teens – two boys and two girls with speculation being at least one of them is related to the original characters. Production kicks off this Summer ahead of a Summer 2020 release.

Feig Intervenes In “Ghostbusters 3” Outrage

new-ghostbusters-gets-an-early-trailer-696x464.jpg

Filmmakers Jason Reitman and Paul Feig have both shown decorum in a way others haven’t in the wake of quotes arising from a podcast interview with Reitman this week.

In 2016 Feig attempted a reboot of the beloved 1980s “Ghostbusters” film property, one boasting an all-female cast. Reviews were good (not great), but the box-office was disappointing – the film making just $229 million worldwide on a $144 million budget. The vocal backlash against the film online was also strong, leading to people decrying or supporting it sight unseen as it became something of a political football.

Then a few weeks ago it was announced that Reitman would follow in his father’s footsteps and helm a new film which would serve as a direct sequel to the first two movies and ignore the 2016 reboot. That too was met with divisive debate.

This week Reitman appeared on Bill Burr’s Monday Morning podcast and said some comments about his plans for the franchise – comments that have since yielded backlash of their own. Reitman says:

“I’m not making the ‘Juno’ of ‘Ghostbusters’ movies. This is going to be a love letter to ‘Ghostbusters’. I love this franchise. I grew up watching it. I consider myself the first ‘Ghostbusters’ fan. I was like seven years old when that movie came out and I love it. I want to make a movie for my fellow ‘Ghostbusters’ fans.”

He also discussed the work that went into creating that short teaser released earlier this year:

“We went back to the work files for the sound of the proton pack. And we went back to the stems of Elmer Berstein’s score. Just for where it says, in the teaser, ‘Summer 2020,’ we went back and found the original physical vinyl letters they used to create the ‘Ghostbusters’ poster in 1984. Rescanned them and then our titles guys reprinted them. We filmed the titles. Not like in a computer. We shot physical titles with a light and smoke effect because that’s how they would have done it back in the day. We are, in every way, trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans”

Since the interview quotes were published, they have been attacked for being condescending if not outright insulting. Reitman has realised he inadvertently further stoked the divisions over this franchise and says his remarks were misunderstood. He tweeted: “Wo, that came out wrong. I have nothing but admiration for Paul and Leslie and Kate and Melissa and Kristen and the bravery with which they made Ghostbusters 2016. They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie.”

Reitman also has one supporter in his corner – Paul Feig himself who tweeted: “Jason was a supporter of mine at a time when I couldn’t get movies made. He has always been a true gentleman to me and a supporter of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. I can’t wait to see his take on the Ghostbusters universe. Big love and respect to you, Jason. Your fan, Paul.”

For now it seems, Sony is better off not mentioning anything about the new one until some actual announcements start coming though.

Coon, Wolfhard Up For “Ghostbusters 3”

Carrie Coon (“Widows,” “Fargo”) and Finn Wolfhard (“IT,” “Stranger Things”) are being eyed to star in Jason Reitman’s new “Ghostbusters” film at Sony Pictures.

The story for the sequel to the two original films is said to focus on a single mom and her family, with Coon as the mom and Wolfhard as her son. More family members have yet to be cast.

The project has no link to the 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot and while there’s been online debate about that, both director Paul Feig and actress Melissa McCarthy have given Reitman’s version their blessing.

Reitman is directing the film from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kenan while Ivan Reitman will produce. Filming begins this summer for a July 10th 2020 release.

McKenna Grace To Lead “Ghostbusters 3”

12-year-old “Captain Marvel” actress Mckenna Grace, who plays young Carol Danvers in the film, is in talks for the leading role in Jason Reitman’s new supernatural adventure film “Ghostbusters 3” at Sony Pictures.

The project serves as a sequel to the original 1980s films by Ivan Reitman, Jason’s father. Reitman and Gil Kenan penned the story which centers one family in particular.

Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) has already been cast as her brother and Carrie Coon (“The Leftovers”) is playing her single mother. Going by the working title “Rust City,” the project is due to go before cameras this summer and is dated for a July 10th 2020, release.

Grace will next be seen in the horror spin-off “Annabelle Comes Home” this Summer.
