The budget for culture in Japan is overwhelmingly small,” he explains. “The Agency for Cultural Affairs uses around ¥2 billion ($18 million) for films.

Its counterpart in Korea uses around ¥40 billion ($356 million), while in France the Centre national du cinema et de l’image animee (CNC) has an annual film budget of ¥80 billion ($713 million).”

The government’s Cool Japan initiative, he notes, has a similarly substantial budget, of ¥20 billion ($178 million), but it goes “to all of Japanese culture, including anime and food, not just to films.”

“The amount of money it devotes to films is probably not that great,” he adds.

The reason for this relative lack of support, Fukada believes, is the government’s inability to decide “whether films are an industry or culture.”

“In France, the government’s film budget is thought of as a way to protect cultural diversity,” he says. “Diversity is not just films that millions of people see. Those films should co-exist with films that hundreds of thousands of people see.”

In that sense, Fukada says, Japan is still a developing country when it comes to budgeting and planning to support culture.

“In Japan films are considered an industry, so you just have support for what sells. It’s the Hollywood business model. Hollywood movies sell around the world as a matter of course. Japanese films are in the Japanese language, so they’re a kind of minority — you can’t sell them abroad like Hollywood films. It’s a mistake to stick only to the Hollywood model.”

So what I get from that is you don't have to have a big budget to make quality film. Japanese films are quality films and I'm surprised they still think otherwise. Budget is out of the question (although it could help to enhance). One just needs subtitles.

Interesting - thanks for the article. My first thought was "but how can you reconcile that quote with all the great cinema-as-art films that came out of Japan circa 1950's/60's?" ... then I thought "but weren't Ozu, Kurosawa, MIzoguchi, Naruse, Kobayashi, Ichikawa, etc etc even Suzuki, Imamura, etc etc all working within the studio system?" ... then I realised that there's at least a semester's worth of discourse in that train of thought.
Probably should leave it to someone who's younger and has more energy than me.

Yeah, zelena with his facts and his knowledge of the film industry blah.gif

In his absence let me speculate. Korea's government/corporate marriage spent money on culture. I think it was just a slush fund in the beginning of this century. And it was a hit, the Korean Wave. Then the people giving the money got interested in bigger returns, and got a little more involved. This is why more recent stuff seems designed by committee to me. Subtle, but noticeable. And investors always seem interested in spending more to make more. This is another "Hollywood" infiltration. Bigger budget films, that then more and more people are going to be sticking their noses in.

But Korea is Korea and they will still do their weird stuff. They still make great movies. I hope it continues.

Japan is Japan. An island nation. I don't think they will ever get over it. It's what I like about their culture, though. Kind of. They still make films for Japanese people. I see this in the volleyball too. They recently came out with a big announcement, restructuring the volleyball leagues to show the world that Japan loves volleyball more than anyone. But just try and watch a Japanese volleyball game! You practically can't! So how are we supposed to see this wonderful show of volleyball love? They are so insular. I don't think they care about the rest of the world loving them. Which, as I say, is good (for me) in many respects.

Precisely what I like about them too (and SK). They don't have to adapt to the worldly culture. So even if its Engrish they say in their movies, the movie still sells. They are distinct and unique and they don't do it to please others, they just do it because that's what they are.

I don't have much contribution to the forum lately so I'll just post a news which will probably elicit a who cares? from the board. lol. Two of South Korea's most attractive people are getting married on October 31, 2017. No, its not me and Park Bo-Gum. :emoji_kiss_ww: I'm talking about SONG JOONG-KI and SONG HYE-KYO whose fanbase as a couple started when they starred in the big hit Descendants of the Sun.

Yeah, I found out about it when I was scanning enviously (because why can't I be as beautiful as Song Hye-kyo and then probably the Park Bo-gum-plsletitrain nuptials can finally happen) vids of the Song-song wedding. He died the night before the wedding. And speaking of him, I can't for the life of me remember if I have seen this film but why do I feel like the film is something that I must see. You know that feeling that a movie is like a classic and you feel you've seen it already but when you see some snippets of the film you can't remember it. I'll watch it.

I don't know where to put this: I'll probably start a thread entitled "Me and my Korean Fantasies that's headline to me and no one else on this forum" lol but I just found that the recently casted live-action Mulan, beautiful chinese actress, Liu Yifie is Song Seung-Hun's girlfriend in real life. It really came as a shock to me because (I was really expecting that I could get a chance to seduce SSH cry.gif ) aside from being of different nationalities, they also have a May-december affair (they have an 11 age year gap)--not that that's still uncommon these days but yeah, that looks like an unlikely affair to me because I haven't seen their movie together, The Third Way of Love.

Hmmmm....while Liu Yifie is busy filming her Mulan, she gets to meet other guys, and that's the best time for me to slip that love potion into Song Seung Hun's drink and he can then come to my loving arms.......:emoji_purple_heart: :emoji_kiss:

When I first saw her, I knew without a doubt she's one cute Asian beauty. Not only is she one hell of a beautiful girl, but she gets to call SSH her boyfriend!!! Man talk about being lucky, she's got it all. I concede.

Ugh, I watched it again and around 10 minutes to the film I realize I've already seen this! Arrrghhhh... I've entirely forgotten about it. I forgot how it ended although I do remember there were scenes were the girl was with the other guy and even the child and poor husband was ripped off his husband and father duties (???) but the player is really loading slow (thanks to our very fast internet speed here) and I erm, uhm, kinda lost patience so can you please just tell me how the film ended? As in literally, how it ended. biggrin.gif

tell me how the film ended?
uhm, As I recall, hubby interrupts the wedding with documentation that the little girl is his. Somehow I think the girl then leaves them both. The two guys become friends ... and then they all plan to live in a house together. The ENDING is of the three of them at the soccer game (in Germany?) because they all love sports.

I think I remember feeling the ending fizzled off into dumb space because they thought it would be a happy ending. huh1.gif

I can't find a good picture online of the North Korean Cheer Squad being sent to the Olympics grr.gif

But holy smokes! I just saw them on the TV news. Beautiful beautiful women! Keep your eyes out. I don't know why I thought there wouldn't be any attractive women in North Korea. dunnoz.gif Boy was I wrong.

If you google image "North Korean Cheer Squad" the results aren't even close to what I just saw on the TV
